Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is NPS safe? What if I lose my money?

Yes, NPS is regulated by PFRDA, a Government of India authority. It is as safe as keeping money in a bank. Returns are market-linked, so they are not fixed, but historically NPS has performed better than fixed deposits over the long term.

2. What is the minimum amount I need to start?

Just ₹250 to open an account. After that, you can contribute any amount, anytime — even ₹10 per transaction.

3. Do I have to pay every month?

No. There is no fixed monthly requirement. Contribute whenever you can, based on your income and farming season.

4. Can I withdraw my money before I turn 60?

Yes, in specific situations — after 3 years, you can withdraw a portion for education, marriage, house purchase, or medical needs. Full exit before 60 is also possible after 15 years in NPS, though a larger share must go toward a monthly pension.

5. What happens to my money if I die?

The entire amount goes directly to your nominee or family. There is no cash restriction or complicated process if a nominee is registered.

6. Do I need to visit a bank or office to join?

No. Your NABKISAN representative or Pension Agent (FPO) will complete the entire process for you, including paperwork and verification.

7. What documents do I need?

One identity proof document, plus PAN card, bank passbook, photo, and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

8. Is this only for salaried or government employees?

No. NPS is open to every Indian citizen aged 18 to 85, including farmers, FPO members, and self-employed individuals.

9. Who do I contact if I have a problem with my account?

Any issue with the NPS account can be raised with the FPO or NABKISAN, and NABKISAN resolves it directly.

10. What if I miss a year without contributing?

Your account won’t be closed. From the second year onward, if the minimum yearly contribution isn’t made, the account is temporarily “frozen” — not lost. To reactivate it, you simply pay the minimum contributions to your account (presently ₹10 per year).

11. Can I have more than one NPS account?

No. You get one PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) for life. It stays with you even if you move villages, change banks, or switch representatives — never open a second account.

12. Can I open a Tier II account without a Tier I account?

No. Tier I must be opened first. Tier II is an optional add-on that can only exist alongside an active Tier I account.

13. Can I choose more than one nominee?

Yes. You can name multiple nominees and decide what percentage of your money each should receive — the total must add up to 100%. You can change your nomination anytime.

14. What is an “annuity” exactly?

It’s simply the monthly pension itself — a fixed payment made to you at regular intervals (usually monthly) after you exit NPS, funded by the portion of your savings used to purchase it.

15. What if I become physically unable to continue farming or working?

If you’re certified with a disability of 75% or more by a government doctor, you’re allowed to exit NPS early under the same terms as a normal 60-year exit — with more favorable withdrawal terms than a regular early exit.
